Václav Havel's Place
The project "Václav Havel's Place" was proposed by the Czech Embassy in Washington, DC in specific his excellency the ambassador
Petr Gandalovič.
The briefing concept was to create meeting place with president Václav Havel and his democratic views in mind.
The Linden tree, is the national tree of the Czech Republic. The tree has heart-shaped leaves, which also draws reference to Havel's own signature.
He always signed his name in green color with a heart in red. Democratic debate and dispute were
the final concepts created by Bořek Šípek.
His idea was to establish a gathering point for democratic discussions and freedom of speech in memorandum of late president Václav Havel.
"Václav Havel was always an enthusiastic supporter of dialog and surrounded himself with other people who find dialog a vital part of life. I like how he could not stand the people that were not willing to truly listen to their companions or opposition. I think that any kind of imperative towards conversation is one of the most valued attributes of Havel in todays quarreling and diverse world.
That is why I created his memorial as a functional and useful place to encourage people with different views and opinions to come together and discuss. The state when we communicate is a state of happiness."(Bořek Šípek)
The first Havel's place was officially unveiled at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. 3 October 2013. The patron was attended by Mrs. Dagmar Havlová and Mrs. Madeleine Albright. In the Czech Republic was the first (and fourth overall) bench placed on the Maltese Square in Prague.
